Now, during lockdown and online schooling you are beginning to understand the recurring comments you’ve seen in your child’s school reports.

You’re observing how difficult it is for them to sit still…. to listen…. to follow more than one instruction at a time….to remember…

You understand now where the teacher is coming from… You have your teacher cap on!

Science has come a long way since we were in school! Now with a comprehensive psycho-educational assessmentfollowed by specific recommendationsyour child can remediate many of their underlying challenges! So, take advantage of these advancements in science and help your child remediate their challenges!

A comprehensive psycho-educational assessment evaluates development and functioning across multiple domains

A. The COGNITIVE domain will generally look at the following 4 key ability areas:

1. Verbal language abilities, i.e. the ability to take in, understand and process spoken language, as well as the ability to express and communicate ideas and concepts. In the classroom, these abilities are essential for understanding what is being communicated by the teacher, for reading with understanding, and for communicating answers effectively.

2. Ability or potential to learn, analyse patterns and problem-solve without assistance. These are the skills that enable children to solve puzzles, build models, and reason when solving problems.

3. Working memory ability, i.e. the ability to pay attention to spoken information, keep it in memory and form a response. When the teacher gives the class three consecutive instructions, it is the child’s working memory ability that enables them to remember those instructions all while following through with them. In Math, working memory ability also allows them to concentrate, hold information and formulas in mind, all while solving the problem or equation!

4. Processing speed, i.e. the ability to quickly and accurately take in visual information and discriminate between similar-looking shapes and symbols. When children have to spot the difference in identical images, and even when they have to differentiate between the letters “d”, “b”, “p” and “q” when reading, it all comes down to effective visual information processing.

1. The ACADEMIC domain assesses the child’s abilities in reading, spelling, and mathematics.

2. The BEHAVIOURAL domain of the assessment looks at aspects of being restless, under- or over- active (yes, like that time when you were certain they were being driven by a motor)…

3. Children do not always have the ability to articulate their inner experiences of self-doubt, worry, anger, sadness and more… The EMOTIONAL domain allows us to get a glimpse into the child’s inner world and understand how what they may be feeling (e.g. worry, self-doubt, frustration) might be affecting them at school and at home, and how we can support them and help them to overcome those challenging feelings.

Wanting to know exactly where your child’s learning block is? Make a booking to receive a comprehensive psycho-educational assessment that pinpoints the area(s) of development.

Depending on your child’s specific areas of strength and development that are found in this comprehensive assessment, specific recommendations are made…
